Keeping a healthy body and mind
By taking good care of ourselves, we may be able to reduce our risks of age-related health conditions and improve our overall quality of life. The ‘Strategy for Older People in Wales 2013-2023‘ recognises the growing number of people that are affected by dementia and the importance of early recognition and support. Looking after our own wellbeing is very important, particularly as we grow older.
Below are some tips on keeping the body and mind healthy:
- It’s well-reported that quality sleep is good for memory formation and general health and wellbeing. Aim to get at least 8 hours sleep every night. Establish a regular sleeping pattern and relax before bedtime by reading, having a hot bath or dimming the lights. Watching the television or using a computer/ device is not advised just before going to bed as these are stimulating and can lead to difficulties falling asleep.
- Eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly can reduce the risk of dementia, stroke, diabetes and many other conditions.
- Have regular checks such as blood pressure and cholesterol to help identify any problems that can contribute to health conditions.
- Lead an active lifestyle that combines physical, social and mental activity. Experts suggest that this will help to reduce your risk of developing health conditions and you’ll hopefully enjoy life more as a result!
- Maintain a strong network of friends – staying socially active can help protect against Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
- Use it or lose it – it’s thought that those who continue learning new things throughout life and challenging their brains are less likely to develop dementia. Multiple tasks or tasks requiring communication, interaction, and organisation offer stimulation for your brain. Learn something new such as studying a foreign language, playing a musical instrument, reading a book, or taking up a new hobby. Practice memorisation, such as capital cities or countries. Enjoy games and puzzles – these can be a great mental workout. Do a crossword, play board games, cards, or word and number games such as Scrabble or Sudoku.
